Secret Life of Novels Prize Successes

Huge congratulations are due to Will Eaves and Susmita Bhattacharya, who have both been recognised by major prizes in the last month. Murmur, Eaves’ latest book, an extraordinary journey into the dreamworld of Alan Turing, was announced as the winner of the £30,000 Wellcome Book Prize. And Bhattacharya’s Table Manners, her collection of short stories published by Dahlia Books, was named as the winner of a Saboteur Award over the weekend. Eaves was also earlier this year announced as the co-winner of the Republic of Consciousness Prize, alongside Alex Pheby.

Both Eaves and Bhattacharya are due to appear at Secret Life of Novels, a TLC event on June 6th at the Free Word Centre, at which they are invited to present, in an exciting visual format, their creative processes as writers. Each writer will have 20 minutes, and there follows an intimate sofa chat about their writing processes.

The series has received rave reviews so far, and this will be the third offering. Previous guests include Booker-longlisted Wyl Menmuir, CWA Award-winner Amer Anwar, and Womens’ Prize longlisted Kelleigh Greenberg-Jephcott.

Also appearing on June 6th will be the American novelist Joseph Scapellato, whose hybrid, ambitious literary work across short stories and novels has won praise from the likes of Laura van den Berg and Charles Yu.

Secret Life of Novels Guest Reviews

“A thoroughly enjoyable event with a great selection of guest authors. They were entertaining, informative and emotionally engaging. To share their creative processes and, at times their own insecurities, demonstrated selflessness and an open honesty, which was greatly appreciated. An event great for writers; aspiring and established.”

“The Secret Life of Novels is a brilliant and truly inspirational series. Each of the three authors speaking at the event were so generous and open while sharing their stories. Listening to them left me energised, inspired and hopeful. And the event was wonderfully hosted as well. I couldn’t have asked for more.”

“This was my first TLC event. It won’t be my last. An amazing opportunity to hear from three authors about their writing journey. Inspirational and motivating. A great location, too, and excellent value.”

“A fantastically intimate event that was as insightful as it was inspiring.”

“I have been sitting on my novel and losing confidence in finishing it and this was just what I needed! I liked the variety of the speakers and their very different novels, approaches and presentations.”

“This is a great format enabling people to learn about the process of writing novels, distinct from other writer events I have been to.”
