Lessons from film: what we can learn from the big screen to create more powerful stories

Join us as film director Alby James takes us through this interactive workshop all about how the art of screenwriting can help us to:

  • Understand character and motivation, and that actions are not what they may seem
  • Strength test our structure by creating a powerful logline
  • Pitch ideas with confidence by understanding how to capture your audience quickly
  • Sketch out a powerful story, quickly, using a simple and effective character journey map

This workshop has been designed with fiction writers in mind, using techniques and tools from TV and film to apply to any creative work in progress. No previous screenwriting experience is necessary.

Alby James headshotAbout the Tutor

Alby James is a producer, director, screenwriter and talent development trainer. He currently heads Dramatic Encounters, a production company that seeks to redress the neglect of stories that include the black perspective in contemporary and historical films and drama. Through the company’s academy, he also assists emerging writers, directors, story editors and producers to understand how to develop high quality scripts and avoid stereotyping minorities. At the beginning of his career, for 15 years Alby was a theatre director, including 9 year as artistic director of Temba Theatre Company. He’s also worked as a change manager and on committees to help arts and media companies internationally adopt and fulfil diversity and inclusion. He’s won awards for his work as a writer, producer and director and was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 2019 New Year’s Honours List. In December 2022, he received an Honorary D. Litt from the University of London.
