TLC is proud to announce that we are a partner of the UK’s first ever Disabled Poets Prize, which has been founded and set up by former TLC client and Jerwood Poetry Fellow, Jamie Hale.
The Disabled Poets Prize offers deaf and disabled poets the opportunity to be awarded significant cash prizes, as well as a wide range of development opportunities, designed to support the shortlisted and winning poets in furthering their careers. Founded by Jerwood Poetry Fellow Jamie Hale, and with partners including Spread the Word, Verve Poetry Press, The Literary Consultancy and The Arvon Foundation, we hope that these awards will bring the work of those poets to a wider audience, showcasing the work currently being produced by deaf and disabled poets across the UK.
The awards have three categories, best single poem, best pamphlet, and best poem performed in British Sign Language, and prizes in each category ranging from £50 to £500.

“When, in 2018, I applied for the London Writers’ Awards programme, beginning my relationship with Spread the Word, I received a Free Read for my poetry manuscript. It didn’t just show me what could be improved, but taught me about the joy of editing, and the value of feedback. To have TLC on board and offering prizes including Free Reads and membership to their online platform, feels very significant, and demonstrates their extensive commitment to supporting the development of marginalised poets”
