Wellbeing and Submissions: An Agent’s POV

March 19 @ 7:00 pm 8:30 pm

Wellbeing and Submissions: An Agent’s POV

Literary agents are often a writer’s first advocate. Increasingly, however, the pressure on authors and agents alike has meant that there have been conversations swirling about where responsibility for author wellbeing lies: is it with the agent? The publisher? The author themselves? According to recent reports, many first-time published authors report a negative impact on their mental health. What should be a joyous process is often tinged with uncertainty and anxiety. But why is this?

In this session we present an honest view of wellbeing on both sides of the coin through the submissions process. Literary agent Rachel Mills takes us through how agents manage this process for their authors, and outlines writers can expect – the better to be prepared for what can be a challenging if still exciting time. And, as a published author, she reflects on her own personal experiences going through the process, and the impact on her own wellbeing. Expect an intimate, candid talk as we explore key themes and think about how writers can best protect themselves and stay connected to their motivation, joy, and commitment to their writing practice.
