Fee structure

All the below fees are inclusive of VAT. TLC posts all manuscripts out First Class to your selected TLC reader at no charge to the writer. Please indicate clearly when contacting us if you are resident outside of the EC and we will remove VAT for you at point of costing.

Payment can be made via cheque payable to ‘The Literary Consultancy Limited’ or via a bank transfer. Once we have received your manuscript (see How to Submit for full guidelines) we will email you our bank details. For international submissions, we recommend avoiding high bank transfer fees by using a service like TransferWise.

Short stories are charged individually. Send in x3 or more individual stories and receive a 10% discount. If you wish to submit a full collection of short stories, please enquire for a fee quotation.

We are pleased to offer returning clients a 5% discount on re-reads of previously submitted manuscripts. This only applies if the re-written work is sent back within one year from your first submission. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers.

Arts Council Bursaries for Low-Income Writers

In addition, our services are recommended by Arts Council England, and we are delighted to be able to offer a quota of free reads for high quality writers from low-income households. Please see ACE Free Reads Scheme for more information. The Guardian also recognise our commitment to quality and honesty, and in 2011 formally recommended TLC as their consultancy of choice.

*Submission Package Report

The Submission Package report is a new service, introduced April 2019 following a period of consultation with our writers and readers. An industry specialist TLC reader will provide specific feedback on your ‘Dear Agent’ letter, synopsis, and first 8,000 words. You must have a completed manuscript in order to access this service. Quick Turnaround

We can provide feedback within 7-10 working days for an additional 40% of the standard fee added onto the overall cost. There is no print fee for quick turnaround assessments. If you require this service, please contact us first so we can check editor availability.

Gift Vouchers

It is possible to purchase a gift voucher, of your chosen value, for a loved one. Vouchers are redeemable only against the service they are bought for (manuscript assessment, mentoring, or events) and must be redeemed within 12 months of purchase. Vouchers cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers and must be used by the named recipient only. There is no cash equivalent and there are no refunds on gift vouchers. We are happy to print send the voucher to your chosen recipient First Class (or by email if preferred), along with a personalised message, at no additional cost. Postage and Printing

We forward all manuscripts hard copy to our readers, who are based across the UK, with some in Europe, the USA and the Middle East. First Class postage within the UK from the TLC office to your reader is included in the manuscript assessment fee. When submitting to TLC, you can post us the manuscript and documents, which we will forward on, or you can send them to us electronically as Word documents. Please note that we charge a 10p/page print fee for any manuscripts sent to us electronically, up to a maximum fee of £30. There is no print fee for quick turnaround reports. If you would like your manuscript returned, please ensure you include a SAE with sufficient postage, otherwise it will be securely recycled. Please ensure you do not send us your only copy of your manuscript.

Overseas clients

We prefer overseas payment by bank transfer. Please contact us for bank details. All bank transfer charges must be covered at point of payment; please note that some transfer fees may also apply within the E.C. We do not accept cheques in a foreign currency. All website fees on this page are inclusive of V.A.T. unless otherwise indicated. Clients who are resident outside the E.C. are exempt from V.A.T. For a list of EC countries please see here.
