January 22 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
For a lot of writers, the business of publishing feels counter to the creative act of writing. But really, if you are serious about getting published, it can be empowering (and vital) to understand how the industry works and, importantly, how writers make money, and how agents make money for you.
In this session with literary agent Philippa Sitters, we will be pulling back the curtain on the machinations of the publishing business model, and looking at:
– Traditional book advances + royalties model
– Non-traditional models such as no advance, higher royalties or the 50/50 split share.
– Subsidiary rights – exploiting associated rights such as film/TV, translation, audio.
– Event, book festivals, chairing, speaking at schools, corporate events.
– Social media, Substack and other small jobs outside of the publication process itself.
– How much an agent/publisher actually makes from you.
