The 7 Principles of (Good) Fiction
Nobody wants to write formulaic fiction, but in this workshop we’re going to reframe our understanding of what this might mean – knowing what reader expectations are, meeting them, and then exceeding them. When something isn’t working with a manuscript, nine times out of ten the root cause is in one of only a few areas: a main character that isn’t proactive enough, goals that aren’t strong enough, conflict that is not clear enough, and choices that are not consequential enough.
Whether you are starting to plan your novel, or need to reverse engineer a draft that isn’t quite working, this workshop will look at the fundamentals of character development and plot structure. Don’t get these elements right, and your readers will feel something is missing. But get them right, and your readers will follow you wherever you want to take them. You need to know the ‘rules’ before you can break them, and in this 90-minute workshop we will cover all of the essentials and look at practical ways to apply them to your own writing.
