J. S. Barnes is a novelist, critic and dramatist based in Norwich. He is the author of five novels: The Somnambulist, The Domino Men, Cannonbridge, Dracula’s Child and The City of Dr Moreau. His sixth – Frankenstein’s Monster – is due to be published next year.

As a critic, his work has appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, the Literary Review, the Critic and the Spectator US.

He has written extensively for the audio medium, writing adaptations of Frankenstein, Dracula and The Invisible Man (starring John Hurt). His Sherlock Holmes drama The Seamstress of Peckham Rye won the Audie award for Audio Drama of the Year in 2022. As a writer of Doctor Who audio drama he has written scripts for David Tennant, Tom Baker, Peter Davison and many more.

He has taught creative writing at the City Literary Institute, Kingston University and for the British Council. He holds a first-class degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Oxford.
