The Literary Consultancy is delighted to be supporting The Thinking Woman’s Writing Award, set up by author Kate Jegede. Applications are open from September 14th for the Award. The Award aims to increase the visibility of women writers writing non-fiction works with a philosophical or critical thinking theme. The winner will receive a full manuscript assessment through TLC, and will also receive a free one-year subscription to the RSA’s Fellowship scheme, as well as the chance to meet and discuss publishing prospects with the team at LAW Agency. Kate will judge entries to the award, and a winner will be announced in November.
How to Apply
Applications for The Thinking Woman’s Writing Award open 9am Friday September 14th and will close at 11pm on Friday October 26th***.
To enter your work, please send an email to with the subject header ‘Thinking Woman’s Writing Award Submission’, attaching as Word documents:
- A one-page summary or proposal of the work, indicating whether it is complete or partial
- An extract of no more than 5,000 words from your manuscript
- A short covering letter (please give us a little information about yourself)

Eligibility
Applications are welcome from all women writers whose genre is non-fiction Philosophy or Critical Thinking. Kate’s definition of this category is broad: she wants to encourage any women to submit who are working on, or thinking of writing, a book that explores how we think and live now. “I think of present-day philosophers as ‘thinkers’, and firmly believe that the role of these individuals is just as critical today as they were in the time of Plato and Socrates. What has changed, however, is what the global community considers to be important… I am impassioned by the discovery of contemporary voices that can help shape the modern world and steer in the direction of a vibrant future that serves everyone. This starts by encouraging those who want to share their ideas to come forward and once they do, ensuring that they are met with encouragement and support.” (Read the blog)
The Thinking Woman’s Writing Award is about this. It is about helping those with ideas who want to write about them to create books that are powerful, and inspirational. We recommend browsing the Waterstones ‘Bestselling Philosophy’ category for a sense of what’s out there, and which books might fit.
There are no age limits. We are only able to accept work submitted by writers who are currently resident in England for this award. Work submitted should be for nonfiction or creative nonfiction – unfortunately we are not able to accept works of fiction in this cycle. Please do not submit work currently on submission to literary agents. Work that is complete (at max. 100,000 words) is preferred, however works in progress are warmly welcomed. Applications from Black, Asian, minority ethnic, and low-income writers are particularly encouraged. About the Founder
Kate Jegede is a British television presenter and author with a background in science. She was first introduced to metaphysics as a teenager by her mother, a former yoga teacher and education specialist. She developed a penetrating and enduring fondness for the self-empowering teachings of Neville Goddard, and remains just as steadfastly devoted to spreading his message today. After completing her studies, Kate moved to Switzerland to work at the World Health Organization, developing educational resources for rural communities in Sub-Saharan African. In addition to her academic science career, Kate has worked with the BBC Science Unit and BBC Radio Oxford, and served as news editor of the international journal Africa Health, for whom she has conducted research trips, helping set up a learning resources and study center at one of Nigeria’s forefront teaching hospitals. She has been published in the internationally acclaimed science journal, Nature. Kate has also presented two science series aimed at young adults for Channel 4 in the UK, earning a BAFTA nomination. She lives between Lagos in Nigeria, and London.

The Literary Consultancy was the first editorial consultancy for writers set up in the UK, in 1996. Its aim was to provide honest, professional editorial feedback to writers to give them a better sense of whether and where their work might fit into the ever-changing market.
TLC continues to provide its core manuscript assessment service to writers writing in English at all levels across all genres, and runs a nationwide bursary scheme supported by Arts Council England to provide its services at no cost to low-income writers.
