What makes a writer? What helps them to create ideas? How are they motivated to keep writing? What are the main barriers they face? Are writers likely to have been keen readers in their childhood? What satisfactions come from writing?

The life-long value and benefits of involvement in reading have been explored in a number of projects, yet we lack a detailed understanding of why some people write (or don’t). The Literary Consultancy is proud to present in their first outing the findings from a report by Kingston University and University College London as part of the first large-scale research project that has sought to understand more about the early influences and personality traits which shape a writer, the motivations and working practices of the writing community, and the benefits of writing to an individual and to society. In association with 6 writing organisations including TLC, the study also extends research by Professor Adrian Furnham (UCL) in the development and exercise of individual creativity – particularly in relation to business leadership – by exploring this issue in relation to writers.

Dr Alison Baverstock, Associate Professor of Publishing, Kingston University. Former publisher with a strong interest in widening involvement in reading and writing. Founder of Well Worth Reading, www.readingforce.org.uk and @kubigread Co-founder MA Publishing at Kingston University. Author of many titles on creative writing and publishing. Board member of The Society of Authors (2013-2016) and involved with the subgroup responsible for widening participation.

Professor Adrian Furnham, Professor of Psychology, UCL. Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a highly influential consultant to business, on the editorial board of a number of international journals and past elected President of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences. The author of over 750 scientific papers, 65 books and regular journalistic columns, Professor Furnham is particularly interested in the development and practice of creativity.

Jackie Steinitz, Economist and Data Analyst. Extensive experience in the fields of statistics, economics and market research. She has designed, managed, analysed and interpreted more than a hundred market research surveys in all continents of the world. She has also written extensively as a business journalist, an economist and as co-author (with Baverstock) of a number of papers on surveys into publishing and self-publishing.
