This is a free event by invitation only, for participants of the TLC/PTC Editing Training Scheme

In light of the recent escalation of COVID-19, TLC will be offering this as a Zoom webinar online, to protect the health and safety of our speakers and participants. We have been be in touch with all ticket-holders with instructions on how to join us, and we look forward to seeing you online.

This event will offer a view of how editing professionals can work with publishers both in-house and in a freelance capacity, featuring publishing industry speakers in a panel format, exploring how and why practical editing skills are useful, and in which roles they can be applied. Offered as part of TLC’s Editing Training Scheme, in partnership with the Publishing Training Centre.


Becky Alexander

Becky Alexander has worked as a Managing and Commissioning Editor for Penguin, Bloomsbury, HarperCollins and Carroll & Brown. She now works as a freelance Managing Editor and Senior Editor for Penguin (Ebury/Vermilion) and other companies, specialising in high profile non-fiction, from food to feminism. Recent books include Little Veggie Eats, Find your Voice and The Modern Midwife. She has worked in UK book publishing for 20 years.

Louise Harnby

Louise Harnby is a freelance fiction editor with 30 years of publishing experience. She works with independent authors and specializes in crime fiction, thrillers and mysteries. She has proofread for ​25 publishers including Chicken House; Kogan Page; Little, Brown; Pan Macmillan; Polity; SAGE Publishing; Salt; Yale University Press and Zed Books. She is an Advanced Professional Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), a member of ACES, and a Partner Member of The Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi). Shreeta Shah

Shreeta Shah is a Copy-editor at Puffin Books, Penguin Random House Children’s. She worked in television until a career break brought her to the Bath Spa Creative Writing MA, where she rediscovered her love of words and working with authors. She trained as a proofreader and worked as a freelance editor before joining Puffin Books. Shreeta works on a range of non-fiction and fiction books, including those by Jacqueline Wilson and Joseph Delaney as well as debut novelists such as Emma Smith-Barton and Manjeet Mann.

Chair: Aki Schilz

Aki Schilz is the Director of The Literary Consultancy, the UK’s longest-running editorial consultancy for writers, providing editing services, mentoring and literary events. She is a Trustee of Poetry London, and sits on the advisory board for the award-winning publisher Penned in the Margins. Aki is a judge for the Bridport First Novel Award and the Creative Future Literary Awards. She is also a prize-winning writer, and co-founder of the Saboteur Award-shortlisted #LossLit digital literature project. In 2018 Aki was named as one of the FutureBook 40, and nominated for an h100 Award. She has also been shortlisted for the Kim Scott-Walwyn Prize for Women in Publishing.
