A story in a day

In this online writing masterclass, tutor Shelley Weiner harnesses three decades of teaching experience to help you Find, Shape, and Write a story in a single day. Through her method of creating strong and plausible fiction by working from the ‘inside out’, Shelley will challenge your imagination and enhance your skill. Under her careful guidance, you will find a story that grabs your fancy and discover the techniques and tools to make it coherent and plausible. It’s a day that will turn ‘make believe’ into the making of fiction in a creative, enjoyable way. This masterclass is ideally suited to those who are already writing and need help boosting their creativity.

The masterclass will run online 10am-4pm, with an hour’s break for lunch. You will be doing various writing exercises throughout the day. A notebook and pen are recommended for this, to help you focus on the writing instead of the screen.

Where do we find the stories that are the raw material for fiction? Using creativity-boosting exercises, we locate and expand on the stories that lurk in the unlikeliest places.

Using the techniques of fiction, we put characters into a setting, creating an illusion of reality. Our raw anecdote is transformed into a plausible narrative that is fixed in time, with a beginning, a middle and an end.

With clarity and precision, we embark on the act of writing: choosing words, honing sentences, bringing our story to the page. Our aim is to make sure that the fledgling idea, the envisioned narrative so carefully planned, is captured in the most effective prose.

In only a day a new story has been born – still young and quite raw but bursting with potential and ready to be shared for reflection and discussion. Here is where we discuss what comes after this workshop: the editing and polishing of our stories and writing goals for the future.
