Arts Council Funding for Writers

Arts Council England is a major source of funding for writers keen to create new work, develop their career, and reshape or redefine their work. The three main sources of support currently open to individual artists from ACE are:

  • National Lottery Project Grants
An open access programme for arts, museums and libraries projects.
  • Developing Your Creative Practice
Supporting individuals who are cultural and creative practitioners and want to take time to focus on their creative development.
  • Support for Freelance Workers
Financial support for freelance workers in the arts and culture community, such as technicians, stage managers, artists and performers.

This webinar will help you understand Project Grants and Developing Your Creative Practice, each of which offers an opportunity for writers to fund their work and expand their practice. It will summarise the benefits and drawbacks of each, and help you approach a funding application with confidence.

An Introduction to Funding Applications

We realise how challenging preparing a funding application can be; it’s not a language that all of us know instinctively, but it is one we can learn. We have therefore programmed this free webinar, designed as an introduction to writing a strong application. Arts consultant Sam Ruddock will talk through the basics of funding, preparing an application, and we will be going through some written exercises to help you tackle some of the practical aspects of the fund-writing process.

What You Will Learn

In this webinar you will learn:

  • What Arts Council England funding is available to writers, who is eligible, and how to decide whether to apply
  • The basics of the Project Grants and Developing Your Creative Practice funds, and which is better for you
  • How to think like an Arts Council assessor when writing an application
  • How to summarise and clarify your aims, and communicate these effectively
  • The nuts and bolts of the application itself.

Pre-Webinar Reading

We strongly recommend that participants familiarise themselves with the main website pages from Arts Council England about their funding streams before attending this session. You can find those here:
