A Free Word ‘Finding Power’ Season workshop, Curated by The Literary Consultancy

In light of the recent escalation of COVID-19, regrettably Free Word will be postponing the season that this workshop is part of, to protect the health and safety of all speakers, venue staff, and participants. Free Word will be in touch with all participants by email about this. Please note that all TLC events taking place until July have been postponed until further notice. We remain in close contact with relevant partners in order to ensure our events policy remains in line with government and Public Health guidance and we will inform our audiences of any updates.

How do writers find their creative voice, to become more purposeful storytellers?

In this inspiring and introspective workshop with award-winning novelist Patrice Lawrence, writers will be tasked with identifying their motivation for writing, so that they can connect with readers on a deeper, more powerful, level.

Often, we become obsessed with ‘what’ is written, and neglect to connect with ‘why’ we write in the first place. By focusing on our personal experiences, we will try to re-connect with our reasons for writing, and what we want to achieve with our voice.

This workshop is open to everyone regardless of writing experience.

TLC is offering two free places to writers unable to afford the ticket fee for this workshop. To apply in confidence, please email with a brief note about why you would like a ticket. If you require travel or access assistance, please let us know in your email.

Take a moment in Breathing Space, a collectively curated reading room of zines that offers quietly radical solutions to established power systems, led by alt-publishing practice OOMK. Then, immerse yourself in the scaled-up pages of zines with the collaborative Step-Into-A-Zine installation. Join a kitchen table organising session with Selina Thompson, or a silent WhatsApp chat with Travis Alabanza. Hear from Latinx writers on histories and futures of resistance, and young people from The 4Front Project on building peace. Listen to punx of colour at a Decolonise Fest gig, readings from working class writers celebrating Sabrina Mafouz’s anthology Smashing It. Find your own voice in our future-facing political writing workshops and learn about how to challenge corruption and policy with Carole Cadwalladr, Liberty and Maslaha.

The season will also feature a special edition of BSL integrated poetry variety show What Words Are Ours? from Talia Randall and an interactive lecture from Suzanne Alleyne’s timely new project The Neurology of Power.
