‘Producing a print book’ is one of three practical skills workshops run by TLC for writers who have decided to self-publish. This workshop is run by self-published author Patsy Trench.

In this workshop, Patsy will be taking writers through the process of submitting manuscripts through Amazon’s print arm, Createspace. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops, with a text-only file of the manuscript they wish to upload, as well as a hard copy book whose layout and look they wish to emulate. Using these books as templates, Patsy will lead participants in an informative discussion about page sizes, fonts, and industry standard layouts, in order to inform each writer’s choices about which look and layout would work best for their manuscript. The workshop will also provide important information and guidance on blurbs, cover design, and proof copies, as well as looking at how Createspace’s distribution works.

The aim of this workshop is to arm participants with the necessary tools and information to be able to continue to work on the look and layout of the book at home, before submitting to Createspace in their own time, and ordering a proof copy.

Patsy Trench is a former actress, scriptwriter, lyricist and children’s theatre director. She holds an MA in Theatre Text and Performance from RADA and Birkbeck College. She is currently a lecturer at Kingston University, and is also a freelance editor, reading scripts, screenplays and fiction for The Literary Consultancy.

This workshop is based on Patsy’s own experience producing her book The Worst Country in the World in print and ebook form.

Her next book, Self Publishing in ebook and print: a practical guide for the technically challenged, will be available as an ebook through Amazon from September 2013.
